The Spelling Bee!!!

On Monday,December 17, we had a class spelling bee. It was very awkward at the moment of the spelling bee, because everybody was very nervous.

We had to start off by saying the word, and then spelling, then confirming the word again. Some people had a hard time on that.

I missed on the word “costume”. I knew how to spell it but I totally forgot at the moment.
The three finalists were Paulina,Josie, and Brandon in Mrs.Thompson’s class, Katie Grace, Beatrice, and Amber in Mrs.Wilcox’s class. CONGRATS TO THEM!!!

I’m glad we did this because its very fun!!! Its more about the fun than the winning!

Awesome Science Project

Hey guys,

So yesterday in science Ms.Thompson said that we are going to do a project about land forms. We had to make different land forms out of clay. We were split up into groups of four.I was in the group with the green poster board. We made a mesa,a volcano, delta, sinkhole, and a mountain. After we were done making the land forms we had to paint them. Today we finished making them. I think we did a good job.It was a messy project.

Flying virus

In school a lot of people are getting sick with the flu, fevers, and coughs,. Every day up to 5 people  are absent a class! This applies for teachers and students. Staying home on a school day is so not fun, when you come back from school you have to do more learning than normal. Here are some easy ways to keep YOU from getting sick or when you are sick...

  • washing your hands,

  • covering your mouth when you sneeze or cough,

  • getting a good nights rest, and

  • taking medicine when needed.

To every one who is sick , I hope you get better soon!

The Benchmark....

Yay! Benchmark testing is here! For the second time. And this year there's science too. Next week we are doing the benchmark. Tuesday we are doing reading, Wednesday is math and Thursday is science. Doing the benchmark is VERY slow and not very fun. At all.

We have been getting ready by practicing, LOTS of practicing. We do it in library, math, reading, pretty much EVERY class. I don't like it but I guess it's good for the teachers to see what we know.

-Camille F.

This week has been very busy. One really exciting was that Mrs.Wilcox is having a baby! We found out about two weeks ago, but she did not tell us if its a girl or a boy.
So just this Monday she brought two posters. One was for a girl and the other was for a boy. Team blue was holding the boy poster and team girl was holding the pink poster. I was with team blue. When the time came to tell everybody gathered around Mrs.Wilcox. I was anxious to know!!! She told us that the board that goes up is the one. All of a sudden...
THE BLUE ONE GOES UP!!!
I was so happy. Team pink was a bit disappointed but still congratulated Mrs.Wilcox!
I hope the best to Mrs.Wilcox!!!

chorus field trip!

After benchmark  chorus is going on a field trip!!! For the field trip we are going to the hospital on December  14, 2012.  don't worry parents we will not be gone long.  We are planning on singing 6 songs.   Chorus is also staying for lunch.  My favorite song  is "We Will Jingle" because it's to the same tune as "We Will Rock You." I am very thrilled to go on this field trip!!!

Thanksgiving Break

Thanksgiving break was just last week. And I personally enjoyed it a lot. Its only one week and of course it was Thanksgiving!

I gave thanks for my beautiful family that I have, for my great education, my friends,my teachers, and my good health.

Whats better than spending a afternoon with your family and eating really good food!!! My favorite food in Thanksgiving is mashed potatoes with gravy!!! Most people eat turkey. But not everybody! Did you know some eat ribs, ham etc? Its interesting to know what kind of meat some family's eat for Thanksgiving.

Many family's traveled. I've heard that many people went to Tennessee. Some to Ohio. And many more places.

I enjoyed Thanksgiving Break!!!

Captain Pirate

I interviewed Fiona C. (Captain Pirate) to see what she thought of the musical.

What is one of your favorite scenes in the musical?

Probable scene two because it is one of the first songs i'm in?

How  do you feel about being one of the main characters?

Excited but at the same time nervous.

How do you think the musical will go?

I think it will go great because we have practiced a bunch and everything sounds really good.

Is it hard talking in a pirate voice?

Kind of. The only problem is that I smile too much.

Was it hard to memorize your lines?

-Camille F.

Some of them. But a lot of them were funny and easy to remember. The hardest was one of my last lines.

Holiday Musical

This December, students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades are doing a musical called A Pirates Christmas. The Musical is about elves that are given a break and go to a Island. Soon they run into pirates, the pirates learn that it is always better to give than to receive, to care, to share, and that Santa is not called White Beard. 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade practice during music and sometimes during ELT .If you want to come it is on December 4th at 6:30 pm.It is free to the public so anyone can come.

Election Results!!

Hey guys,

The election was on November 6. A few weeks ago I took a poll and posted it. If you read it then you know that Obama won but that was only for Ms. Wilcox’s class. A few days later Ms. Hudson announced that 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade voted and guess who won? OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!! He didn't only win the school election. He won the real election.

The day before the election my class went to the library. Ms. Hudson showed us three kinds of ads the candidates made. One showed them being nice. Another one showed them telling us what would happen if the other candidate wins. The other one showed then telling us their plan for america. Ms.Hudson also told us how voting changed since the 18th century.

After the election Ms.Wilcox showed us Obama’s victory speech. After that we watched Mitt Romney concession speech. When I was watching the news I heard many people say that they voted for Obama. The reason they voted for him is because they thought he just needed more time as president. So I hope Obama has a nice 4 years as president. Bye!!!

Can-a-thon

At Chase Street school every year we do this contest called Can-a-thon. In the contest every class collects cans and at the end whoever has the most cans wins! If you win you get to go on a walking field trip to the food bank.

The reason for this contest is so Chase Street can help the people that  live around there that can't afford to buy food for themselves. It is important because it's nice to help your community. The food bank in Athens is called The Athens Area Emergency Food Bank which they are the ones that give the food to the people.

Last year Mrs. Fielding's class won the Can-a-thon. Let's see who wins this year!!!

Field trips

On Wednesday 5th grade is going on a field trip to the Georgia Museum of Art. Ms.Dean said that we are going o look at sculptures, paintings, drawings, etc. I can't tell you a lot about it, because it hasn't happened yet.

But I know that we are going on two big field trips, this spring. I don't know what they are, because the teachers want it to be a secret. If you read the blog this spring you probably will hear about it.

I really want to know what the two big field trips are but I'll have to wait till spring. So that's all I can tell you about the field trips.

The Presentation in the Library!!!

The 5th grade teachers had a surprise for the students. We then found out special people were coming to talk to us about recycling.

Ms. Jill told us many story's that they know about animals  that almost died or died because of all that debris in the ocean. Debris is trash that floats in the ocean. One of the animals was a turtle named Guss. He gladly survived!!!! But there was also another turtle named GreyStone. He sadly died. He was way to weak to even move.

At the end of the presentation they gave us a bag with a book about Debris. And a bookmark that smelled like lavender! And much more!!!

the wedding party

Last week there was a wedding party for Ms.Thompson. It was during intervention. Ms.Larson ( the former 5th grade teacher) brought donuts, Ari brought cookies, and Takiya brought juice.

After we where done eating we had extra recess. But we had 30 min.

I thought that was fun. So that was the wedding party.

New Netbooks!

Hey guys,

On Monday the whole 5th grade got their netbooks! There are lots of rules for netbooks. Like you have to hold your netbooks with two hands or else it will drop and break. The netbooks are windows 7 and they are really fast. If you get on something you're not supposed to get on you may lose your privileges to use it.

When we got the netbooks we had to check them out like library books. At the bottom of it  there is a sticker with your name a letter and a numbers. When we got the netbooks we got on Google Chrome to check our emails. Ms.Wilcox would just sent us random emails like what’s your favorite color and stuff. You should see how happy the 5th grade gets when the teachers say we can use the netbooks. Okay bye guys.

classification lab

Hey guys :),

Last week Mr.Brian came to our school , and brought some animals. We got to look at some amphibians, mostly frogs, and toads. We also looked at some reptiles, like the yellow spotted salamander, the soft shell turtle, the box turtle, etc.

Then we went to the rug to look at some dead mammals, like raccoons, cats, possums, a bat, a fox squirrel, etc.

My favorite animal was the yellow spotted salamander because I thought its spots were cool.

So that was our day with Ms.Brian.

Is The White House Haunted?!?

People of the United States have said the White House is haunted, but is that true?

The ghost of Abe Lincoln is most popular and most seen. People say they have seen him in his room sitting on the bed or near the fire place. What do you think?

Other ghosts in the White House can be seen to. Abigail Adams( first lady) has roam the the East Room drying laundry before. They say if you smell soap out of nowhere, that's her passing by.

Dolley Madison (another first lady) likes to hang around the White House too. If you pass by her you will smell a hint of roses. It says when they tried to dig up some flowers she got angry.

But those are only some of the White House ghosts. Would you want to spend the night at the White House?

The spelling bee

Hey guys,

So on Monday morning I was just doing my morning work and then Ms.Adams came and said that the school spelling bee is coming up. DA DA DA!!! Well I guess everyone knows last year's winner or maybe you don't. If you don't know last years winner it's Emma. This year's spelling bee words are harder than last year.

First we'll do the classroom bee. The three people that survive the classroom bee go on to the school spelling bee. The one person that survives the school spelling bee goes on to the district spelling bee.Who ever wins that is the winner!

Well all I know is that the classroom bee is in December and the school spelling bee is in January. Who do you think will win? I guess that's it okay bye guys!

5th grade math

In 5th grade math this year we have learned about decimals, order of operations, and factors and multiples.

We get to do all kinds of fun activities, like high roller, adding and subtracting, card games etc. There are also boring things like scan-tron, benchmark, the C.R.C.T, etc, but it's not that bad to me.

I don't like home work that much but its OK. Some people love homework.

So that's what 5th grade is learning in math.

I only do chorus so I'm going to tell you what we do.

In chorus we are going on a field trip to a hospital. At the field trip we are going to sing a few songs and we are going to do a dance to one of the songs.

I chose this club because I love to sing and dance. The song I love to sing is We Will Jingle.

President votes

Hey guys,

I have been hearing that this year President Obama is running against Mitt Romney so I decided to ask people who they think should be our next president.  I even asked Ms.Wilcox. One person changed their mind from Romney to Obama. Okay I know you want to know who won so I'll tell you.

President Obama - 25 votes including Ms.Wilcox and us bloggers

Mitt Romney -  zero votes

I guess everyone wanted President Obama to have a second term. Wait that's just only Ms.Wilcox's class.

Clay Busts in Art!!!

In art we are working on really cool clay busts.

We have to show an emotion on the clay heads. It was a hard process but very fun! First we made our head and shoulders. Next we added eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. And by then the clay was not as smooth as the first day, but it was still useful. Lastly we added details on the face such as bow ties, glasses, hair, etc.

Mrs. Dean (our art teacher) will fire them very soon, and we'll be able to paint!

I'm thinking to paint my clay bust colorful! I bet they are going to turn out awesome. Can't wait to see!!!

Night John

Night John is a sad but great book.

The two main characters are Sarny, Night John, and Mammy. Sarny is a little girl. Night John teaches Sarny how to read. They're all slaves.

Their owner Old Waller whips them when he finds out they can read.  Back then it was against the law for slaves to know how to read.

Book Buddies!!!!!!!!!!!

Once a month we go visit our book buddies with  Mrs.Dunston's class in pre k.

We get to read with them and as they grow they will read with us! Sometimes it is a little challenging to keep their attention but it is still really fun!

I always LOVE to read picture books once and a while! Sometimes I will pick books that I used to read when I was little, but now when I pick out books for myself  I like to pick books that we have been learning about. For my book buddy I think the best ones are from their book shelf  because it is a book that they have been learning about!

I always love when it is time to go visit our book buddies!!!

What's Happening in Writing?

In writing 5th grade is doing informational writing. Our topic is "Animals".

Everybody chose a topic.Who would think 5th grade had such big imagination! Somebody chose to research a cockroach! And somebody else researched an octopus!

Our steps were pretty easy. Take notes, draft, edit, and publish. We had the options to make a poster or simply write it on a new piece of paper. Most people chose poster.

We have learned a lot about animals. Did you know wolves can go for days without eating? Or that cockroaches don't have a backbone!?! And that Bird-eating spiders can grow up to the size of a dinner plate! I was pretty surprised at these facts.

Students already started with their poster. They are turning out awesome and colorful! Thanks to all teachers that helped!!!

Sandy Creek

2 weeks ago all of 5th grade went on a trip to Sandy Creek Nature Center.

We went on a walk, and looked at a lot of fungi, some fungi were yellow, green, blue, orange, and some even were white with black polka dots. Then we sat down and talked about what color fungi we would want to be.

Then we went inside to work at cell centers. We saw bug wings through a microscope, we also got to make are own slides. We got to see all kinds of things in the microscope, sometimes we got to see something move.

After that we got on the bus and went home. And that was the 5th grade field trip to the Sandy Creek Nature Center.

A kid named Ransom J. Powell wants to fight for the Union but he can't. Later on Captain Jaroe visits Frostburg.  Captain Jaroe tells Ranse to beat a drum so he can see if he's a good drummer boy for the union. Sure enough he passes the test.

When he gets there he sees the the other drummer boy's name is Danny. Later it was time to do their calls like retreat and tattoo. Retreat was Ranse's favorite. R.J didn't tell his parents before going to the army. That's why he didn't go home for a vacation when the captain said he should. R.J just wrote a letter to his parents.

Ranse's feelings are pretty sad because his friends keep dying. Ranse beats the drum for the first time and something bad happens. Poor Ranse. Danny just died Who will be next?

A Sandy Creek Adventure

5th grade got to go on a field trip to Sandy Creek Nature Center.

My group went on a nature walk first. Did you know there are mushrooms in almost all colors!?!Even white ones with black polka dots. We saw a very unpleasant worm almost get eaten by flies. We also saw many Daddy Long Legs. Many people scared them away.

Next we went inside to learn more about microorganisms and do activities! I never knew cells were so weird. We got to see cells through microscopes. Another thing we did was make our own slides. I made mine with seaweed! Seaweed is very interesting,if you look at it through a microscope, there's multiples of green strings all tangled up!I was the only one brave enough to get seaweed with my bare hands, well at least in my group I was.

Then we all took a class picture and it sure was fun!

Then we looked into more microscope. we looked at different kinds of bacteria in the microscope and the draw it.

Soon it was time for our hike. On our hike we saw a decaying log. I stepped on it and it broke it into two. Ms.Wilcox spotted a deer but we didn't see it. We saw microorganisms. There were different color mushrooms. When we got to the pond we saw little frogs hopping. We tried catching them but they were camouflaged. We also saw turtles. Then we saw the brick factory that used to be there. We could saw lots of bricks that came from the brick factory. Then it was time to head back.
