Ellis Island

For our Ellis Island simulation I am a German immigrant butcher and have a family of  4. One of my children is a blogger in the same room as I type (Frenya). I cannot believe I do not have another boy in the family! I mean, it is not bad that I don't have a boy, but I wanted one to take over my job every once and a while so that I can get some rest, you know? Some Germans came to escape religious discrimination and some came to find a better life in the US. I am really looking forward to the Ellis Island simulation.

To Eat or Not to Eat Turkey?

Should we eat or not eat turkey for Thanksgiving? The 5th graders are writing our opinions about if we should eat turkey or not. I think we should NOT eat turkey from a turkey's perspective. There are plenty of other foods in the world that you can eat. How would you feel if you were a turkey and what's your opinion?

Thanksgiving!!!!

Hola,
This week I am blogging about Thanksgiving! This is my third favorite holiday, because you get to stuff your face with delicious food! I am going to Augusta to go celebrate with my family and I am very excited to be with my family, and I get to go see my great great grandmother! My family is crazy, but you gotta love 'em! I think my favorite part about Thanksgiving this year will be going to see Hunger Games Mocking Jay Part 2 with my aunt, uncle, dad, mom, grandma, grandpa, my cousin Audrey, my cousin Jake, and my little god brother Atom. I think we might take up the WHOLE theater!! What are you doing for Thanksgiving? Leave a comment down below!! Have a good Thanksgiving!!
                                                      Bye for now,
                                                                      Penelope

Ellis Island Simulation Updates!

Ciao! Come stai?

Today I am going to write about a continuous topic... Ellis Island Simulation day! Some of the bloggers and I have figured out who we will be and are so excited for being immigrants! We are from all sorts of countries and families. I will make a list...

Josie: Irish housewife
Tommy: German butcher
Frenya: German 7 year old child (A child of one of our fellow bloggers)
Penelope: unknown
Owen: unknown
Charlotte: unknown
Me (Bird): Italian seamstress

The reason that Frenya has in parentheses "a child of one of our fellow bloggers" is that some people have wives, husbands and children. I meant that when I said "countries and families". Also, one class that Penelope and Owen are in haven't gone to library yet and don't know their identities. They are getting more and more excited! We all are!

Arrivederci!
Bird

Ellis Island Simulation

This week we found out who we will be in the Ellis Island Simulation. I am from Germany. My name is Elsa Gottschalk. My dad is one of our fellow bloggers, Tommy. Ellis Island is a place where immigrants from the European countries came to America. Angel Island is where the Asian immigrants went to which is on the west coast.

Many Germans left Germany for many reasons.

  • To have a new life in the U.S.
  • To see other family members in the U.S.
  • To find jobs, money, and success in the U.S.
  • To avoid being pushed to be into the German military.
  • To escape religious discrimination.
I can see why they left Germany! I am really happy to see what Ellis Island is like.

Phoenix

During ELT, me and fellow bloggers Bird S. and Charlotte M. are working on a separate research project from every one else!  Here are our research topics:

Bird- Dragons
Charlotte-Unicorns
Me-Phoenix

Right now, I am working on my poster and I will soon be finished. It is hard to research a creature that doesn't exist because there are lot of different websites with different opinions about the story, its behavior, and mostly its appearance. I am very excited for the final product!

                                                        Bye, Josie T.

Clubs

This is what is going in clubs. In chorus people are learning 4 new songs. The engineering club is working on 3D printing. The art club people are working on the background for the play. The team sports athletes are playing games. I am in Engineering club. I love all of the lessons on Tinkercad (practice for 3D printing).

Thanksgiving

Good afternoon friends,

I'm going to talk to you about the holiday Thanksgiving. It is a very nice holiday of giving thanks and being thankful for the things we have. I'm Thankful for my friends and family and the food I eat. My favorite Thanksgiving food is cornbread muffins and mac-n-cheese. Frenya's is ham, Josie's favorite is mashed potatoes, Tommy's is shepherd's pie, Bird's is pumpkin pie, and Owen's is turkey with crannberry sauce on top. What is your favorite Thanksgiving food? Sorry I was not blogging last week; I had benchmarks. :-( Have a good Thanksgiving!

Adios,
Charlotte M. :-)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Augusta Scattergood

Augusta Scattergood Skyped with the fifth and the fourth grade and we asked her questions about her books and stuff like that. We also talked about her books The Way to Stay in Destiny and Glory Be as the main subjects. We talked about the main characters lives in the story, mainly the one in The Way to Stay in Destiny because that was the book we were supposed to read for her "visit" to the school. She told us about things from her childhood like her shoe box with some toys that she played "joke poker" with her sister when she was little.

Ellis Island Stimulation

Dia duit! Today I am going to blog about our Ellis Island simulation! We just decided which country we will be from in library. The choices were Germany, Ireland, and Italy. I chose Ireland, but all of the choices were good! We will simulate going through immigration at Ellis Island on the 17th of December. We are doing it in the library, aka where we are blogging right now! All of the fifth grade is so excited and looking forward to being IMMIGRANTS!!!

Selamat tinggal,
Bird

Thanksgiving

Hello fellow people of the world. Thanksgiving is on November 26. What's your favorite food? Comment below. For Thanksgiving it takes my mom at least 2 days to cook our dinner.  My favorite foods are ham, corn, dressing, and mashed potatoes. I don't like mac and cheese, cornbread, and turkey. Our fellow bloggers' favorite foods are mac and cheese, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, shepherd's pie/chicken pot pie, and turkey. The first Thanksgiving lasted 3 days. Most people don't think about why we have Thanksgiving; they just think about eating. It is a time to give back and spend time with your family.

Veterans Day

On November 11 it was Veterans Day! Veterans Day is always celebrated on the 11th hour of  the 11th day of the 11th month. That day is Veterans Day because that was the day that World War l ended.

Here is a funny story: One day I was eating dinner with a friend and my friend has a 5 year old sister and she said, "You know, Thanksgiving is not the next holiday. The next holiday is shoulders day! It is where you write letters to people in the army who miss their families.'' We were really confused until we figured out that she meant soldiers day as in Veterans Day!

                                                  Bye, Josie T.

Benchmarks

This week we had two of our benchmarks, the ELA and the math benchmarks. These were tests to show what we have learned in the unit. We had to take them on our computers, which I did not really like. It was long and mostly intimidating. It was intimidating and long because once you finished you were stuck there reading a book and waiting for the next subject.

Our Square One Projects

Hej läsare,
This week I am blogging about the Square One projects! The square one projects are these printing projects that we did in art.
Everybody made really cool Square One projects, and a lot of people's art got put either in the hallway or on The Artist of the Week Wall. Everybody had really good prints and backgrounds, and they were all mesmerizing. Congrats to Bird, Pierce, and Amari for being the three artists of the week!!

Can-a-Thon

Today I am writing about the Can-a-thon! The Can-a-thon is from now until November 20. The Can-a-thon is where kids at school all bring in cans to donate to the local food bank. The class that has the most cans gets to take a field trip to the food bank. I suggest that you bring in your cans to help a good cause. (Remember to make sure the cans are unopened and that they are food cans!)

     Bye, Josie T.

Square 1 Art

The Square 1 Art project is a fundraiser for our school. This year we made a print block, we painted the background, and then we printed. First we made a design. Next, we drew it on the block. Later, we carved it out. Last, we painted a background and printed the block. Ms. Dean (the art teacher) wanted us to think about radial symmetry, which is when the symmetry goes in a circle. This project took at least 3 weeks. Our projects get sent off to Square 1 and made into coffee mugs, t-shirts, stickers, and more. This project was awesome!

MLK project

Congrats to the 5th grade winners of the Martin Luther King project. The winners are Bird S. and moi.

For this project, 2nd-5th grades did writing or artwork that answered the question "How can I help Martin Luther King's dream come true?"

And now Bird and I are going to represent Chase Street at the district finals along with 2 second graders.
.
Here is my entry:

Dear Martin Luther King,

I will help your dream come true. I will help homeless people.

I would give them food.

I would give what I can.

I would fill them with joy.

I would share about how much I care.

I would share my feelings.

I would tell them that they are not different.

I would tell them that they are great people.

This is how I can help your dream.

From,
Owen

Halloween

Hello Readers!,

I'm going to tell you about my Halloween. First I went trick-

or-treating dressed up as "Super Kitty", then I quickly changed

into a Peter Pan costume and rushed to the Wild Rumpus. When we got

there, we met up with my friend Olivia, who  was dressed as Peter

Pan's Shadow. At the Rumpus, Olivia and I  passed out candy to

other  children watching, and got to see a

lot of other people's

interesting and creative costumes. I had a

really fun and enjoyable

Halloween, and I hope you did as well!

                                   Bye for now,
                                         Amelia
